The Makings of a Beachy Bathroom

We moved into our house over Labor Day weekend in 2013... and we still haven't finished decorating. Sure, the rooms are set up and the house is all in order... but there's hardly anything on the walls—a mirror and one or two framed pieces—but it's just not finished yet. And that's OK with us... we haven't really found the "time" (because who has time, anyway?) to do it yet, so it all currently sits either waiting to be hung or taking up shelf space in the garage while we take our sweet time to get to it.

One of the rooms we have changed the most is the powder room right off the front hallway. When we moved in, it was painted a deep red. We decided to paint it a pale shade of blue and decorate it with a light, airy beach theme. Though the pieces haven't all quite come together yet, we do have a small basket of shells and starfish that Daniel has collected over the years, and we just got this amazing canvas print made from a photo that I took last summer when we visited Whidbey Island. Our favorite thing to do when we visit Whidbey is go for long beach walks, scouring the rocks for agates. The canvas above shows a glowing agate that I found... they are just the coolest!

I can't wait for the rest of this bathroom to come together. I plan on framing a couple more of the photos I took on Whidbey, and adding a few neat vintage pieces to complete the room. I think the most fun part about owning a house is making it your own—and making it your home. And every home is such a reflection of the person who lives in it... I just love that. So while this may be just a tiny bathroom, it is our little tiny bathroom. Love it and all its beachy-ness.

I think decorating your house is something that is alwaysss on-going, you can always be searching for that perfect addition to any room! I love the idea of a beachy bathroom, especially with shells/beach stuff you have collected!

also- exciting to read your national guard updates!!

I love decorating bathrooms! there's just something about making that a nice little place. Sadly, mine isn't even big enough to turn around in, but your's looks like it's coming together!

I love decorating the house too! My husband and I have lived in our home for 4 years now and we are still decorating. But I love how the house has evolved with us and grown into the perfect space. Each room has grown from necessity and evolved with pieces we have hunted for together at flea markets, auctions, yard sales, and thrift stores! Have fun! and I love a beachy bathroom!

I love that rope basket! And the beach print is perfect. I'd love to do something like that in our downstairs powder room when we finally get it finished. We just installed the slate floor and moved the washer-dryer back into its cabinet this week. We still have to install the toilet and vanity and finish framing out the wall niche. Sigh.

I love the shells and the colors! I would make every room in our house a beach theme if I could!

I have been in my home for 2 years and I still haven't decorated it completely the way I want....

Thanks so much, Priya! Yes, it is always ongoing... that's the most fun. It's a constant work in progress and something you can always be proud of :)

Ha! This one isn't too big, so it's easy to fill it with fun, small things. You'll have a bigger one someday, I know it!

That's our favorite, too!! We refuse to go to big box stores to find pieces just to put up. We want to have an evolving collection, like yours, that is gathered from special places all over the world :)

Ooh slate floor... I bet that's awesome. You guys always have some project going, it's very inspiring!

Oh, me too. If I lived anywhere near a beach, I would have the ultimate beach house.

It's fun to play... and having a home is nice because you can truly take your time ;)

You'll have so much fun! Any ideas for what theme you'll do?

Thank you for sharing. So many blogs are superficial, including mine up to this point, to be honest. I don't know if I would be brave enough to talk about my own struggles but one day maybe I will. Best of luck to you.

Liz, thank you so much. That means so much to me, I can't even tell you!!! Sometimes superficial is OK--it helps take your mind off other things, right? But I truly appreciate your comment and want to say a big THANKS!!!

I remember you taking that picture. So pretty picture and bathroom. Funny thing is, that is how James and I are going to decorate our bathroom.
If I ever make it up there, you bet you and I are going to the beach!

The part where you said it makes you "look" (feel) ugly and it feels really, really good is something I can relate to a lot! I always say to myself how pulling out a hair only feels good for less than a second, but waking up every morning and looking myself close up in the mirror, staring at my eyebrows, makes me feel like crap. People don't get that trichotillomania is worse than it sounds and people make a big deal out of it because it hurts to look at the after effect. I'm 15 btw.

It's really hard. People who don't have it just don't understand. I'm so sorry that you're going through this and you feel this way. Just know that you are strong and you CAN make a change when you're ready. It took a long time for me to get there, but now that I am there it feels so empowering. You're amazing... I believe in you. Keep your head up and keep pushing forward!
