Dobby the Bearded Dragon

Dobby the Bearded Dragon

We may not have kids or a fluffy puppy yet, but we do have a not-so-cuddly bearded dragon. Her name is Dobby and she was my present from Daniel in 2011 for our first Christmas together. Some people get jewelry from their boyfriends—or clothes or fancy purses or shoes—I got a lizard. Best Christmas ever.

You guys know we love reptiles... we went "lizard hunting" together on our first trip to Palm Desert in 2012 when we visited Joshua Tree National Park and caught several different species of lizards. You can also see Daniel catching a chuckwalla during our second trip to Palm Desert in 2013 in this video. We just love lizards, turtles, frogs, snakes... all those animals that eat bugs, lay eggs, and don't shed hair all over the house.  In fact, one of the first times Daniel and I hung out, we were rafting the Boise River with his friends and he saw a snake in the bushes and ran over to catch it. I was right on his heels, holding it in no time. He and his friends knew the moment he handed me the snake—it was love.

Sunday afternoon after Dobby's bath—which is really me just putting some water in the bathtub and letting her hang out in there for an hour (she loves it by the way)—I put her down in the kitchen while I was doing some chores. I facetimed my sister during my cleaning spree, and Marnie said it was so gross that Dobby was on our kitchen floor. If you're not a lizard lover, you may agree. But considering that she had just had a bath and rides around on my shoulder half the time anyway, I wasn't worried about it. Anyway... this photo is a little shot of Dobbs as she pancaked herself out on the kitchen tiles to soak up some heat. What a cutie she is.

I love Dobby! She's so cute! I totally want one! Are they a lot of work to take care of?

Not one little bit. She lives in a little terrarium that has lights on an automatic timer. She eats every couple of days (or more, depending on the time of year). Her favorite things are green beans, cockroaches and meal worms. Yep... I keep cockroaches (not the giant winged kind... ew!) in our house. She is super low maintenance and very friendly. Beardies are not known to be mean :)

Okay, I don't know much about bearded dragons (or reptiles for that matter). But I have to say, I love Dobby's coloring. Very pretty :)

That is crazy! I am definitely not a reptile person, I don't know if I could even touch her but I am intrigued! Cool that you just let her hang out and that you give her baths!

She's the cutest, I love her. What a fun photo, look at her little spikies!

You're the only person I know with a bearded dragon but that is so cool!

Dobby is beautiful!

Thanks! One of the reasons we loved her as a baby was because she had a lot of bright red and orange. She changes color all the time depending on if she's in her terrarium or in the bath or running around. She is always the prettiest after a bath :)

Did you remember that we call her that??!! That is honestly her name! Dobby Sue Rowe! :)

I've considered trying to paint them. Wouldn't that be pretty? :)

:) Lots of people are totally freaked out when they come over and see her, so don't worry one bit! We got my friend Carlye to touch her once and that was that... it was like a one-and-done. So cute! :)

When her beard first started coming in, it was the COOLEST. Her spikes are the best. Like her little beard!

Haha~ Do you read Casey Leigh (aka The Wiegands)? She got her son one, too!

She says, "thank you, thank you very much." She's so arrogant, that Dobson :)

Awe I want one. I just can have one because in both houses are cats that won't work well with one. I will have one day though. =] Also I just read your story and it's SOOO cute. Love it.

Yet another reason you're so unique and awesome! PS, the name is awesome. Your brother plays quidditch and you named your pet Dobby. Definitely HP fans in your house. :)

If I didn't think our boxer would want to eat one, I would LOVE to have my own Dobby!

She is so cute! We used to have some lizards but when they passed we got furry babies.

When Daniel was a kid I was always afraid of what he would catch and bring into my house! He had that little Creature keeper thing he carried around all the time! All boy for sure. You know what they say, Aunie? For every crooked pot there's a crooked lid. Of course his wife would have to love lizards. God found you for him.

Your family is SO COOL! That's what I'm talking about!

:) Thanks Cody! Ugh... me and cats don't mix :) haha!

Annelise Rowe said...

Haha! So glad you caught onto that. Yep... Dobby just sort of happened. She had several different names until we decided on Dobby. Also, we originally thought she was a boy, so that's also why she has a boy name :)

Haha!!! You have to see this funny video... it made me think of it: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=775852672441691

And furry babies are so fun because they're cuddly!

Annelise Rowe said...

HAHAHAHA... Megan, this made me laugh out loud... I'm sorry for giving you the creepy crawlies. Ha!

Annelise Rowe said...

Ha! Glad you liked it ... you did like it, right?

Annelise Rowe said...

YES YES YES! I can just imagine Daniel as a little boy running around with his little kritter keeper... hahaha that's so funny. He's told me stories of turtles, snakes, frogs, lizards, bugs... you name it. At least he's fearless! :) I love that crooked pot analogy :)

Annelise Rowe said...

That's what I'm talking about... a fellow reptile lover! Thanks Sarah :)

Annelise Rowe said...

That was one of the reasons we picked her :) She's always super orangey-red after her baths :) I should do a before, during and after photo progression... her color change is insane!

Cody Doll said...

Your welcome. =] No cats? What why?
