Living Room Details

Rustic Living Room Decor

We moved into our house in the first week of September. It's hard to believe we've already been there over two months! While we still have stacks of boxes in the garage and loads of things to still go through, everything is in the house that needs to be in the house at this point.

We haven't placed too much emphasis on decorating or hanging things on the walls because we've been spending a lot of time landscaping. Since we moved in, Daniel has planted eight evergreens and we've given our backyard a semi-facelif: we tore up plants, added mulch, weeded everything, moved the cement wall blocks around to add more planting space, and added 8 cubic yards of dirt—talk about some heavy-duty work! It's a project that will take us a while, but it's one that we enjoy. Now that winter is coming, our biggest priority is getting the hot tub up and running—what a treat that will be!

Inside, we've at least gotten our furniture set up and the great room is our favorite place to be. We haven't fully finished decorating yet, but Daniel hung a clock in the kitchen and a mirror in our living room and that in itself made a big difference. Here are a couple photos from our living room & the rustic decor we're beginning to fill it with.

My favorite thing about the great room is the tall ceilings and all of the natural light. The kitchen has a standard ceiling, but the living room's ceiling is twice as high, opening all the way up to the second-story overlook, where there are more windows and lots and lots of wall space—just waiting for the perfect decor to fill it up. It's all a work in progress, and we're in no rush to get it done. One step at a time, right?

All I have to say is I'm just so happy. Cooking in the kitchen, doing the laundry, cleaning the bathrooms... I don't care what it is, I love it! Making this house our home is my new favorite thing.

it all looks so cute!! Where did you get the throw pillows you have that have trees on them? I have been looking for some like that

I love this! I'd love to see a picture of the work you're doing outside! Those pillows with the trees on them are adorable! I also notice, the table/entertainment center have the square stone pieces...my bedroom set, living room coffee table/end tables all have those as well :) It's cool to see similarities!!! Love your space!!

I'm sure in your mind it will never be totally done! The ideas just keep popping up time and time again... and it's amazing :) Making a house into a home is so incredibly rewarding, and just feels SO good, doesn't it?

Very pretty! I honestly can't wait to have my own house (or even apartment) and decorate. Your's is coming along wonderfully!

Love the style that you have in the room. Looks really good.

Thanks Brittany! The pillows actually came with the couches. We got to pick whatever colors we wanted (they had a zillion to choose from) and those were our favorites. We got them from a place called Sofa Mart here in town :)

Thanks Kristin! We were so happy to find the table and entertainment center. We needed something tall for the ceilings :)

Annelise Rowe said...

That's the best... it FEELS cozy. The only thing we're missing is a fireplace ;( but we have a fire pit outside, so it's not a huge loss.

Thanks! My dad's fiance made the coasters for us and the bear is an ottoman that my parents got when I was a little kid!

Annelise Rowe said...

Thanks Jojo!! That bear is made from sheepskin and has been in my family since I was little. When my dad didn't want it, I snatched it right up :)

Annelise Rowe said...

Thanks Chelsea. Good idea... I think next spring when some of the buds come on the trees and it looks really pretty I'll have to show the projects we will be working on. We will be extending our patio by then and planting more trees so it will be really fun ;)

Oh, and the slate furniture... isn't that fun? I love how many ways I've seen slate used... it's very versatile!

Annelise Rowe said...

I have a set of 3 :) That's the biggest one. We have them all over!

Annelise Rowe said...

Yes it does. It's like our own sanctuary that we just LOVE to spend time in, no matter what we're doing :)

Annelise Rowe said...

Yes! You hit the nail right on the head. We got Smoky (yep, he has a name) when I was a little kid at the Choochokam street festival in Langley on Whidbey Island. He is made of real sheepskin! My grandparents got one, too, and named him Yogi. He was my family's ottoman for years and years. Seriously... probably at least 15 years, if not more. When my dad's fiance moved in with him, he redecorated and Smoky became ours... so fun huh?
Longest story about an ottoman ever. But I couldn't bear to see him go to Goodwill. He's too fun :)

Annelise Rowe said...

Thanks! We scored them... they came with the couches :)

Annelise Rowe said...

Thanks Cait! Ha... I can't wait to actually decorate more of the house :) Our bedroom is currently: a bed. haha.

Annelise Rowe said...

Thanks Laura! Your time is coming and you'll absolutely love it ;)

Niken said...

your home is lovely :)
i really really love that candle holder in the first picture. so cool

Annelise Rowe said...

Thanks Brittany! We feel like it's sort of Idaho-y and rustic, but we can't pinpoint it. It's just us, I suppose :)

Annelise Rowe said...

Thanks Niken! That belonged to my dad's fiance. When she moved in with him, she didn't have a place for it, so we adopted it :) Lucky score, huh? :)

Your living room beautiful!! I love the natural light, I wish I had a house like that :)

I absolutely love you decorations, so simple and adorable - you guys did a great job :)

It's gorgeous- so warm and inviting! Have you taken before and after photos of your landscaping? Your first Christmas in your own home - you must be so excited! I know you'll make it memorable with stories you'll share some day with your grandchildren.

It's so cozy, and I love those candle holders!

I love you new house so far! Such cute details happening, and of course it will only get cuter! We actually got our house the first weekend of September as well, and we still have a lot to do also. It's cute and we love it, but there's definitely still lots of work left!

That bear made me laugh. Your house looks cozy and great!

Lee said...

Such a great story! I would have saved him too!

Annelise Rowe said...

Thank you! The last house we lived in seemed rather dark, so natural light and an open great room was one of the biggest things on our wish lists :)

Annelise Rowe said...

Thanks Alexandrea. That's what we were going for... the more simple, the better! :)

Annelise Rowe said...

What a genius idea... I should go take some now so we can document the changes once spring comes ;)

Annelise Rowe said...

Thanks! We found those at a small specialty boutique while on our honeymoon. They were our wedding present to ourselves :)

Annelise Rowe said...

Isn't it funny how that happens? You work work work and then once a couple rooms are done the rest gets put on the backburner. Oh well... it will get done when it gets done!

Annelise Rowe said...

:) He's definitely unique. I've never seen one in anyone else's house! Did you see any of the prior comments about where we got him? He's so old!

Annelise Rowe said...

Yep! He's not going anywhere!! :) He's like our first cuddly pet :) (besides Dobby!)

Shannon Tatlock said...

I love the bear! He's awesome!!! What a neat idea. You've really got an eye for details and I love all the small ones in these photos. Just gorgeous, Aunie!

Linda said...

I've been known to have a genius idea occasionally. :)

Kateri Von Steal said...

I LOVE THE BEAR TOO! You have amazing taste and style! It looks BEAUTIFUL!

Annelise Rowe said...

Thanks, Shannon! That means a lot. I've never considered myself such a decorator, so that's why everything is so simple :) But so glad you like it! And that bear was our ottoman that I adopted from my dad... we've had it since I was a kid!

And lol about the details. I'm not one for big-room shots, you know? I like the close-ups :)

Annelise Rowe said...

You're sweet. I've honestly never heard anyone compliment my taste before today, so thanks so much. I always figured the less-cluttered, the better!
