Is My Hair Falling Out?

Is My Hair Falling Out?

I realized something yesterday—I think my hair is the longest it's ever been. It currently stops about two inches below my bra line in the back. It's fun having longer hair... I've always been a shorter-haired, chin/shoulder-length kind of girl. But you know what I'm noticing? It seems like my hair is falling out!

Here's what I do to my hair on a usual basis. I wash & condition (a couple times a week) with Joico or Yes To products. After the shower, I loosely wrap my hair in a towel for about 10 minutes to absorb moisture, and then I just let it down and let it air dry—without brushing or combing it (my hair dries rather straight and tangle-free). I don't use many products (the occasional beach spray), and I occasionally use hair spray. I don't usually tease it and I never use heat styling tools. On the days when I wake up with 2nd day hair, I put in a little dry shampoo and put it up into a pony/bun/braid—nothing too special.

So... basically—wash, shampoo, air dry (no brushing or combing), and the occasional dry shampoo when it's dirty. That's all. It's a really easy routine, but am I missing something? All day, I find stray hairs on my back, on my clothes, around my office, and if I even touch the bottom of my hair, it seems like strands come right out. I claim to be the hair expert, but then why does it seem like my hair is falling out? Am I the only one in this hair battle?

Now, I've spoken to a friend about this, and she suggested that since I don't usually brush it, that the hair falling out is what most people probably catch in their brush in the morning. Also, I've heard that when your hair is longer, more does seem like it's falling out. Long-haired ladies, is this true? It honestly makes me want my short hair back (and we all know that Daniel wouldn't complain if I cut it, because he encourages me to do it daily... see this post for proof)! Anyway, does anyone have any advice? Maybe I'm just being paranoid... but any input is appreciated!

I've always had/preferred long hair so I'm not going to tell you I'm an expert but I've noticed with my hair that no matter the length it falls out constantly. It will do it even more after you have a child. I personally love your long hair, I think it suits you. But, you're gorgeous either way!

I have had long hair for years and I'm always finding hair coming out, but I think that's just natural. Like your friend pointed out it's probably just what most people catch in their brush.

However, it could also be because your hair is getting weaker. The summer weather and heat can change your hair's texture and could cause it to fall out easier. Have you tried adding keratin oil to your products or taking biotin supplements?

My hair did the exact same thing when I grew it out from my usual just-below-chin to about the length of yours currently. I haven't figured it out either, so I look forward to seeing what others suggest!

It definitely does seem like more hair when it's long! But I don't think it really is. I've never noticed that my hair felt thinner when it was longer. And I have a very similar hair length and routine. Wash/condition, towel, and let it air dry. Sometimes I run a brush through my hair, but not every time. I also add a little product to help my waves.

This happens to me, no matter what length it is. I have really thick hair and I shed SO much, I presume because I also never brush my hair!

I've had long hair all my life and it still surprises me that I'm not bald. I always brush out my hair after a shower, and that catches a lot of it. After styling it, or just letting it dry, I'll usually lightly run my hands through or around the bottom of my hair to catch more that has fallen out. It's certainly a long hair thing, but I love my hair too much to let it bother me.

Yours looks so great long, hope this helps

I've had long hair my whole life, minus a year or so when I mistakenly cut my curly, frizzy hair and looked like orphan Annie. ;) Having it fall out like that has been the norm. It comes out in the shower, when I brush it, and when I style it. Constantly. I've never thought anything of it & still have a full head of hair - my balding husband is jealous. lol! I've read that sometimes it can do with hormones or vitamins? I guess I just never thought of it as a problem bc it's always been that way. But maybe your friend is right? Because you don't comb it right after you wash, what's falling out is what would have come out in your brush. That's a solid theory (coming from someone who has no authority on the subject! haha!). ;)

I was just thinking the same thing! My hair is the longest it has been in a long time, and I am getting paranoid too!

Katie said...

Haha girl that is totally something that happens with long hair(and normal i think!)!! believe me. I have long hair plus add in the fact that it is really thick and my hair is everywhere. It is like I shed like a dog or cat. But seriously, it happens often. It makes wearing black a pain because pieces are always falling out and don't even get me started on the time that I got a hair in cookies I made for bible study. How embarrassing. But it happens and I am not for sure that there is much you can do. I don't brush my hair even though it gets quite a few tangles but it also has extreme natural wave and if I brush it, I lose the wave. So maybe if I brushed it, that would happen less, who knows?! But totally normal I think haha

aileenbarker said...

I have had long hair forever and I struggle with this too. I only brush my hair right before I get in the shower so that I can get any falling hairs out before I get in the shower because that's when most of it comes out for me. I recommend brushing it before shower and kind of brushing your hair with your hands throughout the day or maybe just in the morning to catch most of the hair. I definitely think it's just more noticeable because it's long.

Whitney said...

It's completely normal! I've always had long and thick hair my whole life. It's usually noticeable when I wash my hair or brush it. There's nothing really you can do, because everyone loses a few hundreds strands of hair everyday. Nothing to worry about :-)

I used to not brush my hair on a daily basis but when my hair started falling out I asked my hair dresser what to do, and she told me to start brushing away! Since then I havent noticed as many hairs falling out, I just notice them on my brush instead! :)

I had something like this happen to me this year. I had very long hair and noticed a significant amount falling out. For me I realized it was most likely a hormonal reaction to getting off of Birth control pills, along with the hair falling out I noticed new "baby" hair growing from the crown of my head. Many new moms experience a similar thing when their hormones begin to regulate. I have also heard that there are just normal "shedding" cycles of your hair and you may have not noticed it before because your hair was short. I just cut a few inches off to regain some thickness and it eventually seemed to stop in a few months.

Hannah Scott said...

I have never cut my hair-- ever-- so I certainly qualify as a long-haired lady! My hair has done some crazy things through the years, including falling out way more than normal, so I've done quite a bit of research. From what I understand, your hair grows in a cycle. If something effects your body at any part of that cycle, your hair will sort of freak out, and instead of growing it will fall out. Sometimes it's hard to connect the hair loss to a certain cause because it doesn't start falling out until it reaches the point in the cycle when it normally would have grown. And it's doubly hard because not every hair is at the same point in the cycle, so not all of it will fall out. I've experienced some serious hair thinning at several points in my life that were usually about a month or so after an extremely stressful event, like getting extremely sick or dealing with something extremely emotionally wrenching.

My mother-in-law is an herbalist and recommended a supplement called HSN-- hair, skin, and nails-- from Nature's Sunshine products. But I have also heard that prenatal vitamins or something with biotin will also work to stimulate hair growth. But if it really is a result of your body fighting back, it's just a waiting game you have to play for it to get back to "normal."

But then again, it could just be normal hair loss that's simply more noticeable cause it's long. I could tell when mine was not normal because the entire brush was entirely full of hair, and it would come out in wads in the shower. Only you can know what is normal for YOU, but a few more noticeable hairs here and there is nothing to be concerned about.

Soapbox complete. :)

I have hair that's about two inches above the back bra strap, but I've struggled with losing hair pretty much my whole life. I've got pretty healthy hair, but I just shed all the time. :/

Kateri Von Steal said...

I find that I have a lot of hair falling out of my head too.. Our hair (by your description) is about the same length.

I brush my hair in the morning, to get away the bed head, and I might use a clippy to keep it up in the back.

But still, I find hair on my clothes, or if I run my fingers through my hair I have some coming out.

You are not alone!

Tina Byland said...

Okay. So you probably need a trim. It's true what they say about needing frequent trims when your hair is long. I always guage my need for a trim on when my hair starts falling out again. Don't know what it is but after a healthy cut, the problem goes away for another couple of months. Also, I use a nylon bristle mason pearson which is best for thick, long hair. And like you already do... try not to brush at all when it is still wet. Hard, I know, but it saves those hard earned ends! :)

Tina Byland said...

One more thing... Iron. :) lots of it. :)

Erin said...

My hair is short, but I shed like crazy. Some of your hair may have reached it's maximum length and at that part of the hair cycle it falls out naturally. All hair has a maximum length where it stops growing. For example, your eyebrows stop growing at a certain length and fall out and grow back. Your head hair does this too, and the length is different for everyone. I can't ever seem to get my hair to grow past my shoulders, because at that point it's reached the end of its cycle and falls out--so when it's shoulder-length I shed more because more of my hair is at the point of the cycle. If that makes sense.

Here's what wiki says about it:

Telogen phase
The telogen phase is the resting phase of the hair follicle.[12] When the body is subjected to extreme stress, as much as 70 percent of hair can prematurely enter a phase of rest, called the telogen phase. This hair begins to fall, causing a noticeable loss of hair. This condition is called telogen effluvium.[13] The club hair is the final product of a hair follicle in the telogen stage, and is a dead, fully keratinized hair.[6] Fifty to one-hundred club hair are shed daily from a normal scalp.[6]

Okay, since my mom is a hairdresser and has been one for 16 years, don't worry. It's completely normal when this happens. Right now it's shedding because it's summertime (I know right! We aren't dogs!!) so the winter coat is falling out. Girl, trust me when I say... when I wash my hair, you should see the clumps that are left in my hands. And our hair changes every 7 years. So don't worry!!

i've had long hair all my life and i'm always shedding like crazy but i still have super thick hair. i think it's completely normal and probably varies some from person to person. if your hair isn't noticeable thinner i wouldn't worry about it. i always notice that i lose tons when i've gone a day to two without brushing too.

I do exactly the same as you do with your hair and I find hairs e.v.e.r.y.w.h.e.r.e! On average you lose 100 strands of hair a day, and that's healthy! 100 STRANDS OF HAIR! Don't worry, I'm sure your hair is perfect :)x

Longer hair is more noticeable when it falls out. From spring to summer my head seems to shed a lot, but usually it stops during summer.

mackensie said...

My hair falls out constantly and it was waaay worse when I had super long hair because it was way more noticeable. I clog the shower drain with all my run away hairs. It's nothing to worry about, it seems like you've got plenty to spare. :)

cindiepal said...

No matter how long my hair is, I always feel like I'm losing it! My beau has stopped commenting on it, now he just quietly plucks the stray hair off my back without saying anything :).

I have found that combing my hair after it's air-dried for a bit has been helping. And making sure to trim at least once a month (I'm super lowkey, so my trim is me snipping the bottom inch off just to get rid of the dead ends!).

Chelsea said...

No advice here, but when I have longer hair it always is falling out like crazy. Literally, the longer it gets, the more that falls out. You're not alone :-) Isn't it wonderful to be a female? ;-)

NicolaKirsty said...

My hair is rather long and I'm always finding it on my clothes! On days when I style it without really brushing, I definitely notice an increase in the hair which comes out in the days afterwards. I'm sure I read that it's natural though and the we lose so many strands of hair a day so I've never really worried about it too much.

If you don't brush it they will just fall out when they are ready. You will loose the same amount but it looks more as its longer. It also sticks to things easier so you'll notice it more.

Rachel G said...

Like everyone else is saying, normal hair loss gets way more noticeable when you hair is longer. I have shorter hair and I find my own hair on my clothes and all over my house all the time. But I have, and I always have had very thick hair--some people shed more than others, and some people shed their hair in cycles.....the vast majority of the time, nothing to worry about.

Anna Sinclair said...

I notice way more hair around (bathroom, clothes, everywhere) since I stopped blow drying my hair and only minimal brushing in the morning...

Also, I was told we lose more hair if we're stressed - there was a period of time when I was losing tons of hair and was afraid I might go bald for petessake! I was really stressed out at that time, so who knows.

Kim said...

The same exact thing worried me as my hair got longer. But both my sisters are hairdressers and told me that I'm probably just noticing more because long hair clings to your clothing easier than short. Short would just fall to the ground and I wouldn't notice. Also, the average person supposedly looses between 100 and 200 strands every day. So it's normal.

Aubrey Kinch said...

I read somewhere everyday you naturally shed between 100-200 hairs a day so I always think that's what's happening when I find it all over. Ha!

Kelsey Wilburn said...

my hair is EVERYWHERE, falling out all day. it's insane. but it stays the same amount of thickness and is just noticeable as it's longer. you're fine!

I have longer hair, I do not wash it everyday and I don't brush it. I shed like a golden retriever. I assume it's because I don't brush it that it sheds so much and the hair I get in the shower seems so extreme because I'm not doing it everyday. I think it's all an illusion of increased hair loss because there is so much hair in length. So I think you're good as long as you don't have any bald spots showing up.

JPatch said...

Long time reader, never commented before. Just had to say: about 6 months ago I was *freaking* out because more hair seemed to be coming out in the shower and on my hairbrush than "normal." I tend to pick at my eyelashes and I worried maybe I was doing something weird to my hair without noticing?! I even went to the doctor and had my vitamin levels checked--all was fine. It seems better now, at least I don't notice it. I concluded that my hair was going through a shedding phase, possibly due to prior stress from over the holidays.

Riley Fickett said...

My hair is long (about an inch shorter than yours it looks like and VERY thick, and I shed all the time. It doesn't worry me as much because I have so much hair, but it's very common for girls with longer hair to shed. I never really had hair come out when I had shorter hair in high school, but when it's long it just comes out. The hair that comes out of your head is usually weaker strands that are unhealthy anyway, and broke easily. If this photo of you is recent, I'd say you don't have anything to worry about. If this was a real concern, your hair wouldn't look as healthy as is does! Don't worry :)

I only wash my hair every few days, and only brush it before getting in the shower. I comb it after shower (I still wet it even when not washing) and shed like crazy it seems. I only use organic Argan oil for products, in wet hair. I have longish hair that's growing out from a short haircut but have had long hair most of my life. This is completely normal. I've always done mt long hair this way so I think it's the combination of not brushing often and the length of the hair that makes it seem like you're losing a lot.

Chloe S said...

I have super long hair (always have) and I lose hair like crazy. My hair is also super thick (like, Christmas-tree / large garden shrub thick), and losing obscene amounts of hair has never affected that. You're good. : )

Vicki Gonzalez said...

My hair is the longest it has been in a few years and I was just thinking about this yesterday. I haven't used a brush in YEARS, my hair doesn't tangle easy. I always figured my hair all over the place was because I wasn't yanking it out like people that brush their hair. Only recently, since it has been so long, have I noticed it more than usual. Maybe it is a long hair thing? My hair is pretty thick, and that hasn't seemed to change so I try not to worry about it.

Suheiry/ suheiry.blogspot.com said...

This is totally normal. Right now my hair is at the back of my bra, and it falls out like crazy. AND I don't brush it. It's curly, so I just put on leave-in conditioner and finger-comb it. (I promise I don't have a crazy nest on my head.) Whenever I have my hair in a bob, it does not fall out at all.

Emily said...

I have a similar situation. my hair is thick and does knot easily, however, I haven't been brushing it much, I've been curling it and don't want it to go super frizzy. so I notice the hairs falling out in the shower when I condition it. I'm no expert, but I think it's normal.

Meredith said...

Hair normally falls out at certain intervals (to grow new hair), but STRESS can also cause your hair to fall out at seemingly rapid rates! And, considering your recent post about how stressed you have been and your ED trip, I would say that may be at least contributing to your "hair loss." It happens to me, as well. I wouldn't stress about it, though. Relax more, and it will grow back. It's not a permanent situation.

Annelise Rowe said...

You're so sweet! You probably like me with long hair b/c that's how it's been since I started... I wonder if you'd like it short! Everyone in my family knows me with shorter hair. But I'm not changing it anytime soon :)

Annelise Rowe said...

I never thought about the fact that it could be weaker! I just added a prenatal back in so I'm going to see if that will help... and possibly some biotin too!

Annelise Rowe said...

There are SO MANY suggestions, but sounds like it's rather normal. Thank goodness!

Annelise Rowe said...

Just like me, though I do think you have a nicer natural wave than I do... well, since mine is rather non-existent. And like you said, I have actually noticed that my hair seems thicker, so I guess I shouldn't worry!

Annelise Rowe said...

Aw man, I've ALWAYS wanted thick hair! Lucky you!

Annelise Rowe said...

Thanks so much, Amy! I run my fingers through the ends after it's dry, too. I'm trying to do that less to see if it helps any :)

Annelise Rowe said...

I think you guys are both right! I'm adding back in a prenatal... I guess I'm just so used to short hair! Jeez!

Annelise Rowe said...

Oops! That hasn't happened to me yet, though I guess I have shut my hair in the car door. Oh the woes of having longer hair! Also, I need to get some argan oil... I've heard great things about it!

Annelise Rowe said...

Annelise Rowe said...

Ahhhh the cookies part! Oh my goodness... funny and something I bet you totally look back and laugh on!

Annelise Rowe said...

I think you're right, I should try brushing right before the shower. I lose a TON in the shower!

Annelise Rowe said...

I had no idea people were supposed to lose that much! Wow!

Annelise Rowe said...

Smart! I brushed my hair this morning and have had hardly any fallout all day. Genius! Ha :)

Annelise Rowe said...

You know, I hadn't thought about that either! I did just change "methods," so to speak, so that might be something, and also I should get it trimmed.

Annelise Rowe said...

OK, so after reading all the comments, I think what is falling out is normal, but I have taken HSN before and I might begin again. Also... so much stress lately, that could definitely have something to do with it! PS

Annelise Rowe said...

OK now I feel a lot better! Thanks Laura!

Annelise Rowe said...

The running my fingers through is what causes the problems. But this morning after my shower, I ran a comb through it and haven't had as much fallout. Hallelujah!

Annelise Rowe said...

first of all, thank you! that is so helpful. i've never thought about the fact that our hair has phases, or compared it to our other hair, like eyelashes and eyebrows. that makes so much sense! also, had NO idea that we lost that much hair daily! turns out--I'm TOTALLY normal :)

Annelise Rowe said...

I should try an at-home trim for the bottom ends... I've always been too nervous but I know I need it. Thanks for the reminder!

Annelise Rowe said...

Oh, so wonderful. At least the resounding voice from my female commentators today is that they all have hair that falls out. So thank goodness!

Annelise Rowe said...

OK, well I need to tell myself that it's normal, because it definitely doesn't seem abnormal after reading the comments. Thank you so much!

Annelise Rowe said...

I think you're right, I'm just noticing them because they're longer. I'm not used to this long-hair business!

Annelise Rowe said...

Annelise Rowe said...

Eek! I've been stressed too. I bet that's contributing!

i think because it's longer you notice it more and that's how it was when my hair was long. now since i have it short, i rarely see pieces of hair unless it's from me playing with it {and then it looks like half my hair is on the table}. supposedly you lose 50-100 strands a day, which seems pretty excessive to me!

Annelise Rowe said...

LOL so when you don't brush it for a WEEK it's crayyy! I've been brushing it more often after reading everyone's comments and it's been helping a lot!

Lily Garay said...

So...I noticed that because my hair is getting longer that more of it is falling out, but I do the same routine you do and I agree with your friend. It's because you aren't brushing out the dead hairs so they stay in your hair for a longer period of time or until you brush your hair. You know humans lose 80-100 strands of hair a day sooo when you don't brush it for 2 days...

Annelise Rowe said...

Me too! That seems like way too many. Your shorter hair is SO CUTE!

I have very long hair & experience the same as you... I do use a detangler & argan oil after I wash it, but I only wash a couple times a week and let it air dry 99% of the time.

The only time I hate having long hair is when I have my windows down in my car & a little bit gets sucked outside.... but you don't notice until you roll your windows up & you try to move your head.... not a fun surprise ;)

I have hair that sits right above/on my shoulders (depending on the weather as humidity causes my hair to curl upwards and shrink). My hair is thick and sometimes is coarse and dry but most of the time it is soft and shiny. I use only natural products on my head (100% pure, Sukin etc) and for a while even before I chopped my long hair off, the products ceased the shedding I was experiencing. Flash forward 6 months and my hair is falling out everywhere. It is so worrisome. I mean my hair is healthy right? It is soft and shiny and I make sure to treat it well. How could it be falling out so easily? I run my hand through my hair and at least 2 strands will come out every time. I have a lot of hair (I thin it out sometimes) so I'm not worried about losing some, but I am embarrassed to find hair everywhere and it is a pain in the butt when it tickles my arms and I have to pull it off. I air dry my hair, I don't use any products, I straighten it mildly weekly, but even in the summer when I never did anything to my hair it would still fall right out.

What the heck is wrong with me?
I mean I guess my diet has gotten worse since 6mo ago when I stopped being a vegetarian....

Annelise Rowe said...

Hey! You know, I don't think anything is wrong with you or your hair... or your diet for that matter. I think it sounds like you're doing everything right. I thought my hairloss was abnormal, but it turns out it's totally normal. Do you brush your hair?

Faye Green said...

I brush my hair every day and not one strand falls out, but when i wash my hair (once a week, I go no poo) and I use a wide tooth comb, start at the ends and work my way up...Boy, I have so much falling out that I am wondering If it could be thyroid or just being 50. My hair is just 2 inches below my shoulder, it is fine, and tends to frizz a bit, but since I went no poo for about 3 weeks now my hair doesn't frizz anymore and it is curling a bit.
I know roughly 100 strands fall out a day, but mine looks double or triple the amount.
I saw your hair pic Aunie and your hair looks cute, I think you look good in chin length hair with l light layers.

I use to have long hair down to my waist, It use to be poker straight and frizzy, It seemed more hair was falling out, but it is the length of the strands that give allusion of more. Once a woman hits

perimenopause may be the culprit since my hormones are yo-yoing.

Aunie,

I stumbled across this website a 4 weeks ago

http://www.natural-forces.com/essays/poofree.htm#hardwater

No poo means going au naturale.

I am going through a transition with my hair, for now I clean my hair once a week since i gets oily after 4 days. I should cut down to once a month. My hair scalp will over produce oils since the shampoos of the past strips hair and scalp of natural oils.

I like the fact that I would clean mt hair less and the oil production will balance out, I'm thinking it may take 6 months to a year, but we'll see.

I let my hair air dry, never use curling irons or other heat products and never used hair spray, gels or mouse... they tend to break hair.

I also started taking liquid vitamins again. The first thing I notice in 3 months my skin is different, my nails don't have the wavy indentions or ridges, in 6 months my hair was silky, smooth and shiny plus notice my hair had hairs replacing the one that fell out, so over all my hair got healthy again and started to grow normally.
This is why my perimenopause is mild.

Here is the link if you want to order or read up on it.

Daily complete has 142 vitamins minerals and herbs, all vegetarian.

1 month supply is $29.99 plus sh&h, but it is worth every penny. Oh and the vitamins needs to be refrigerated since there are no preservatives or artificial colors and it is all natural.

Hey Faye! What an incredible resource you are! I'm so glad you told me all of that... I NEED to get back on the vitamin train. I slack big time! And good for you for using no-poo. I think it would be really hard in the beginning but would yield great long-term benefits! Again, thank you so much!

For the first time in my life, my hair is past my bra line as well. And, every time I shower, I have to take my toe and move out the huge clump of dark long hair out of the drain and to the side, so I can toss it once I get out. When I'm rinsing the conditioner out of my hair, pieces of hair pull right off the ends like I'm going through chemo. What I know is, with short hair, it doesn't look or seem like a big deal in the drain of your shower, or it slips through the small openings and slides all the way down your drain. With long hair, the actual hairs are so long that they wrap around each other, making it seem you're losing half of your head. It just looks like more. Honest. I DO recommend however, that you take two loose scrunchies, and put one at the top and one near the bottom for when you sleep. In the winter especially, I dont wash my hair but every three days and my hair is naturally curly. I believe that I CAN lose more than normal if during those three days, my hair gets more and more tangles during sleep. I get headaches when using barettes or things in my hair, so I just put them in loosely.
