My Daily Hair Styling Routine

 Glasses: c/o Firmoo

Lately, I've gotten quite a few emails from ladies who want to know how I style my hair on a daily basis. Frequently asked questions include:
  • What do I do with it when I sleep?
  • What dry shampoo do I use?
  • Do I tease it?
  • Do I use hairspray?
  • How do I get natural-looking waves?
  • How do I style my bangs?

Today, I'm answering your questions. Here's a short video tutorial of exactly how I style my hair when I wear it down.

More details:
  • Fave overnight keep-it-out-of-your-face methods: ballerina bun, French braid, or Friar Tuck (video tutorial HERE)
  • Fave dry shampoo for 2nd day oil absorption & extra volume: Suave
  • Fave hairspray: Lamaur Sprayage (I used Big Sexy Hair in this video)
  • If I shower in the morning, I just let my hair air-dry naturally. It ends up with this same wavy texture. Once it's dry, I follow the same process.
  • To keep my hair healthy, I avoid heat styling tools and I haven't colored/highlighted my hair since May, 2011.
  • My bangs are longer here than usual--I'm growing them out!
  • Song in the video: White Sky by Vampire Weekend

I'm going to try Suave dry shampoo... I've only tried Tresemme (sp?) and HATED it.

I'M GOING TO TRY THIS. Ha. Oops sorry for the caps! Owen stole the laptop to watch you and sing along.
I usually don't go to bed with wet hair because it ends up looking greasy in the morning. But I've never tried pulling it up like that. Usually just down or in a braid or something, never pulled away from my face. I'm gonna try this and see how it works!
Thanks, lady! <3

I am always in love with your hair. I was thinking about bangs, the only problem is I have very oily skin and I am scared that the bangs would make me break out badly. Anyways, such a cute video! Maybe someday I will brave enough to do that with my hair...maybe.

Thanks for sharing! I have fine, thin, just ever-so-slightly wavy hair... so I am going to give this a try ;)

You've got some gorgeous locks lady! I let mine air dry as well and it gets pretty wavy. It's not as tame as yours but I've got A LOT of hair so it gets a little rowdy at times :)

My hair is fine and thin and long like yours so this video has inspired me to try to work more naturally with my hair. I'm on a healthy hair journey (5 months dye free aha) and trying to avoid the hair dryer but its hard because my hair is so flat and the hair dryer gives me a little sumthin sumthin aha.

Great video! I've never tried teasing my bangs before, so I'm going to give it a shot. I currently have the too-long for normal styling but too short for blending into regular hair bangs thing goin' on. :)

your hair so similar to mine, and funnily enough, I style mine pretty much the same way too. At night, I air dry and always wear a ballerina bun, or during the day I air dry it and do that same. It's such an easy way to style your hair, and I love it.

I do use heat for maybe the odd night out where I sometimes straighten it/curl it just to give a different look.

Thank you for the tutorial!!! I'm not sure I could let my hair go like that because though my hair is fine, there's a LOT of it and it tends to have a mind of its own sometimes. I'm going to give it a try, though!

LOVE this tutorial! I don't like to brush my hair or style it, I think I'm a bit lazy for this. But your hair always looks great! I definitely should try your bangs tip. That is the only thing I style everyday -.-

I've never tried dry shampoo before but very curious to try it! I usually wear my hair in a bun when I sleep too. I have a Hermes silk scarf giveaway on my blog, would love for you to pass by and enter!

Thanks for sharing this. I did have a question though. You said you sleep in a ballerina bun. How do you secure your bun? I also sleep with me hair up using a simple hair band with no metal thingies on it; however, it always leave such a dramatic dent in my hair. I was curious to hear what you use to secure your bun. I didn't see dents in your hair like mine get.

Hi Aunie!

I just discovered your blog by following buttons from one blog to the next, not quite sure the connections to tell you the truth! However, I have to tell you I love it! Plus, I'm super jealous of the fact that you can let your hair air dry... mine just turns flat and weird textury. However, I to love Suave Dry Shampoo!

Cheers! Tiffiney *Mingo Ink* www.insidemingo.blogspot.com

How does this have no comments?!?? I LOVE THIS!!!! Best hair video ever! Thanks so much Aunie :) (still getting used to your voice! lol) Xoxo

Great question! I also just use a simple hair band. If you get bad creases, you could always try using a scrunchie (yes, serious), or even try a sock-bun without a hair tie holding it in place!

Thanks for the tutorial! We have similar hair texture so I'll definitely be giving this a try. Also love the technique on the bangs. I always get annoyed with mine falling in my face (darn fine hair texture) so I think a bit of teasing might just be the trick! Have a great week! :)

Thanks! It's the ONLY way I can wear mine down... or else they are way too floppy :)
