AUNIE. Not Annie.

// Jacket: F21 Thrifted // Top: F21 // Scarf: Ross // Jeans: Silver // Boots: Thrifted //

Dear amazing reader,

Lately, I've been getting a lot of
"HEY ANNIE!"
While Annie is a name that is totes adorable...
It's not my name.

I know my header up there makes aunie look like annie,
(that was definitely on accident... but I still love it, so it stays!)
but listen, folks...
it's AUNIE.
Auh-nee.

It's a nickname that my best friend gave me all the way back in 4th grade.
I've loved it ever since.
No one else had called me Aunie until I met Mister Daniel.
His parents insisted on using a nickname for me,
since Annelise (ah-nah-lis-ah) is too long.
It's been Aunie ever since.

If you have called me Annie,
don't fret.
Being born with a Norwegian name,
my name is mispronounced by others on a daily basis.

I'd love to hear what YOUR name means...
write back A.S.A.P., won't you?

Yours truly,
Annelise
a.k.a. Aunie

P.S> Are you ever-so curious about who won my February giveaway?
Let's all give a big CONGRATULATIONS to: SARAH. YAY!

Just found your blog and I instantly love it because of this post! When I say, "I'm Alissa" people think I'm saying "Melissa" ...if I know I'll never see this person again, I just let them think that's my name. And no one, I mean no one, ever spells my name right.

Love your jacket AUNIE!!

BAHAHAHA! I'm an absolutely stickler for names, both spelling and pronunciation! And it makes me sad when people think it doesn't matter, because, well... it's someone's NAME!

I go by Linn a lot, and I've gotten some pretty great barista interpretations.

For LINN:
Gwen
Glen
Gwynn
Wynn <-- Seriously!

For LINDSAY:
Leslie (ALL the time!)
Lizzy
Kinzy

I grew up on the stage, so I know I'm not mumbling. ;-)

Don't worry. I know you're name is AUNIE.

Lisa @ MMT said...

I am totally sorry if I accidentally wrote Annie in a comment haha. Thanks for the clarification on your name ;)

Annelise is such a cute name! I grew up hating my name! Lisa, so short and boring right? I blame my parents for giving me such a generic name!

Lindsay said...

I've been calling you(in my head since I've obvi never spoke to you in person) Aunie, but I say it like "aw-nee". Don't know if that's right haha. Either way my nickname is Linds - nothing exciting or different, but my mom, dad & BFF calls me Linner which I've always loved.

lauren@warmandfuzzy said...

I'm Lauren.
But you have no idea how many people call me Laurie, Laura, uhmm no its LAUREN.

My niece and nephews call me LaLa...i love that though :)

Wow!!! Thank you so much!!! Can't believe I won!!!!

I feel your pain. It's rude, I think. Like people can't take the time to actually read or listen to what your name is.

I get mistaken for Lindsay all the time, or people pronounce my name with a Z, when it's with an S.
Drives me freakin nuts.

Elms said...

A post after my own heart. :) My name is Ami. Pronounced like Amy. Most of the time when people see it, they pronounce it ah-mee, or give me a weirdo look until I say it.

Thanks for letting me rant, it really is a pet peeve of mine.

Eesh said...

Haha! That is why I go with Eesh! I've been called Asia, I-sha...it's just too much!

You're still cute! How do you do it? :P xx

Chloe Innvaer said...

Ah with a name like mine I feel ya! (If only you knew what the VZ stood for! haha) But you did make me look up the meaning!

The meaning of the name Chloe is Verdant And Blooming The origin of the name Chloe is Greek.

I also grew up learning that it meant young shoot.. like a grass shoot... but I like the other better! ;)

Carmon said...

Carmon isn't a very normal name either...and NO WAY anyone ever spells it with an O the first few times. It is always CarMEN or CarMAN...never what it on my birth certificate... CarMON. People call me Cameron all the time too. I even had a lady, correct the way I spelled my name (like, mark through it and write Cameron) as though I don't know how to spell my very own name.
I totally understand what you're saying!!

PS. Annelise was the name I chose to be the names of one of my characters in a "book" I was writing back in middle school, LoL. I think it's totally cool ;)

Cute cute and so so cute!
P.S. My name means: It means innocent, graceful, beautiful, loyal, smart, and pure.

and my parents named me that because of this scripture: Matthew 6:28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the valley grow. They do not labor or spin."

Emily said...

Nicely said. It kills me when people don't bother to get a name right. Especially when it's as cute of a nick name as yours.

You are so beautiful!

I didn't even realize that your header name sort of looks like "annie" until you mentioned it!

Gorgeous photos! :)

Stephine said...

I've always knew your name was Aunie.. but I said it as Annie, very interesting nickname. I get the same thing.. my name is Stephine. It's said the same as Stephanie, but I get called Stef-feen or Stef-fine a lot. Who would call their kid that? lol

Tranae said...

I feel your pain. My name is Tranae (Tra- Nae) and for some reason people pronounce it as Train (really? Train) lol.

Cat said...

Somehow people always think that Cat is short for Katrina. No one ever says Catherine (which means pure), which it is. It baffles me. Brent ALWAYS, gets Brett. He now responds to that instead of explaining. Looking gorgeous as usual.

Ausmerican Housewife - Creating with Kara Davies said...

I hear you!

I'm Kara (care-uh), NOT Cara (car-uh). My last name is Davies (not Davis). My sister in law is Saara (sah-ruh, not Sarah) and we're forever being called Cara and Sarah. Drives me batty!

Apparently people here in Australia have *never* heard the name Kara before.... only Cara. IT DRIVETH ME NUTTETH!

Anonymous said...

My name is Chelsea (chel-see), but people often spell it with "ie" or "y" at the end and pronounce it more as it's spelled (chel-see-ah). It doesn't really bother me, but c'mon how do you say the word - sea? :)

The story is, my parents were sure that if I was a boy, Bo would be the perfect name (great name, just not for me), but they had no clue what to name a girl. Then, my dad was on the road and went to a restaurant called "Chelsea's" in Idaho ;o) (in Coeur d'Alene I think, but it's closed now), and that was that!

Carley Woodard said...

People get my name mixed up or spelled wrong all the time. I'm a person that likes to correct people (as you did here), because if you don't they'll never know the correct way to say it.

I always get Charley or Harley. It's actually Carley. I'm named after Carly Simon, but my mom thought C-A-R-L-Y looked to manly, like Carl. My last name ALWAYS gets WoodWORD, its Woodard. No extra W, but you HAVE to correct people or they will never know the difference.

Jennifer M. said...

Interesting! I knew your nickname was Aunie, but I assumed your real name was Annie. Lol. Guess that's what happens when you assume! ;P

Elucidite said...

You're a lot more agreeable than I am, allowing your in-laws to insist your name is too long and you need a nickname. My name is Elizabeth and I find it incredibly lazy when people tell me it's too long. Like four syllables is just too much for you? I refuse to answer to any nickname whatsoever. Because of this, I am a stickler for names and always make sure I know how to pronounce and spell everyone's name who I come in contact with. I pride myself that I can spell my good friend's full German name. :)

Anna Zimmerman said...

Hi Aunie! I feel your frustration. My name is Anna. Not Anne-uh, AUN-a. I get Anne-uh all the time...even after I address them and pronounce it correctly.

Oh well.

Kellianne said...

I feel your pain girl! Whenever I introduce myself to someone as "Kellianne" (my actual name) people usually respond with "So, Kelly?" Nope, it's actually Kellianne. All one word. Typically they forget and I am called Mary Ann and Mary Jane, and Katie Ann.. pretty much anything that is a double name. Also, in 24 years I don't think I have ever had someone spell my name correctly the first time. It's always hyphened, or separated with a Y on kelly and no E at the end. So frustrating :) And don't even get me STARTED on the pronunciation of my last name! Haha thank you for this post because I was wondering how to pronounce your name!

Gentri said...

Wanna hear something funny? As your blog was loading I was thinking to myself "I bet her name is pronounced aunie, not Annie." And then, here's this post informing me that I'm correct! Haha! People don't usually get my name wrong, but they have to ask if they're saying it right, because it is different. I love the name Annelise!
